It’s still dark outside when my husband and teenage son walk around to the elevated deck of the cabin. The crickets are still chirping loudly in the final moments between yesterday and today. As they lean against the railing they look out to the shadows of boldly standing mountains. Mountains that would show off their diverse fall colors if it weren’t for the blanket of darkness hiding their beauty. I watch them as they take this pause absorbing the last moment of our expiring trip. Their pause is poof enough they enjoyed their stay and my heart fills with happiness and gratitude. I hear mom in the background commenting on the glow of red peeking out from the mountains on the east side of the cabin. I know she too has enjoyed this break in life we call a vacation. As the trip planner I smile in my success and head to the car my family I am so grateful for trailing behind me.

In summary it was a great trip with so much to do. The downside was the crowds. Most mountain towns are congested during leaf peeping season so we were expecting it to be busy. However, we were slightly overwhelmed with the traffic and the crowds in town. We much preferred the trails and our cozy cabin. We really enjoyed playing pool and soaking in the views from the hot tub! Both downtown Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg felt extremely touristy lacking a sense of authenticity I crave. There is a ton to do with kids which makes it a great place for families. If you are like me my suggestion would be to spend as much of your time on the trails in nature or in a cozy cabin with a view away form the hustle and bustle.
